Miami University Bird Observatory Opens
AREI is proud to announce the opening of its second bird banding station in the Miami Valley of SW Ohio and SE Indiana. On May 12th the Miami University Bird Observatory (MUBO) officially banded its first bird—a Common Yellowthroat. MUBO is located in Pfeffer Woods, behind the Oxford Community Cemetery in Oxford, OH. About 13 nets are placed along the ridge-top in upper Pfeffer Woods, and 17 nets are in the lower prairie. As of mid August, a total of 405 birds had been banded at MUBO.

Several high school and college classes visited the AREI Banding Stations in 2004 and 2005.
Empidonax Project:
A research project using DNA analysis was initiated in the summer of 2004 in an effort to distinguish the different species of Empidonax Flycatchers. This project is being continued by undergraduates from Miami University.
